Stand up comedy is slapstick by nature which generates instantaneous laughter.Comedian Julian Clary born in the late 50’s is one such British comedian who started his career with stand up comedy and then ventured into different modes of entertainment like TV,films,theatre and radio .Born as Julian Peter Macdonald Clary in the county of Surrey, to a policeman father and an officer mother ,Julian Clary proclaimed to be a gay, had a flavour for comedy which is different from the others because of its insinuations and double entendre which established him as a popular comedian.
He completed his schooling from St Benedict’s School located at a suburb called Ealing.Later he studied English and Drama at the Goldsmith’s College under the University of London.Julian Clary started his career as a stand up comedian in the early 80’s first under the alias Gillian Pieface and later as The Joan Collins Fan-club. He used garish make up and wore outlandish clothes,dressing up often in weird attires.A dog named Fanny the Wonder Dog considered to be his pet also featured prominently in all his performances.Even some of his famous stage acts notably ’The Mincing Machine Tour’,’My Glittering Passage’ and the very recent ‘Position Vacant:Apply within’ were released on home videos which amply demonstrates the popularity of the comedian Julian Clary.
He also had a distinguished career in television.He often appeared in a show called Friday Night live way back in the 80’s followed by a game show named Trick or Treat where he was a co- host.However,the latter ran for a limited time and Julian Clary came out with his new game show Sticky moments with Julian Clary which had success written all over it for its brand of humour.Another show aired on BBC which deserves mention is All Rise for Julian Clary where he posed as a judge in a mock courtroom setting.Apart from these,he also acted as a guest star in one of the episodes of the BBC drama Virtual Murder along with other famous TV actors.He was also seen in an episode of the comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?.He had his share of controversies also when some newspapers had call for his ban from TV when in one of his appearances in an awards ceremony he played a risqué joke having political overtones.
Julian Clary not only made reality shows such as Strictly Come Dancing popular with his histrionics but also appeared as celebrity judge in programmes such as All Star Talent Show.Further in the year 2012,he also went on to win the Celebrity Big Brother series which catapulted him as one of the most sought after comedians of recent times.He also made his presence felt in the field of cinema and radio.Moreover,he also wrote books and was a columnist for a popular British magazine.He is also known for performing comical renditions of music numbers in his stage and television appearances.Thus because of his innumerable performances throughout his career in different spheres,Julian Clary was bestowed with an honorary fellow by University of London’s Goldsmiths College.
